Class Schedule

We offer affordable dance and movement classes for the Art Museum Area community of all ages, including for youth and seniors, and all levels, including professionals and non-professionals.

Additionally, Cardell Dance Studio provides affordable rental space for artistic practice, showings, and events.

Classes for Professional Dancers & Industry

CDT Company Class | 17+

Instructor: Silvana Cardell

Blending modern dance techniques and somatic studies this class addressing and challenging the dancer’s knowledge and development of an accurate use of alignment, this practice challenge dancer’s skills by increasing their range of movement develop awareness of movement initiation, succession, sense of rhythm and phrasing. The class progression consists of floor work standing center and traveling material. 

Level: Intermediate to advanced. Requires dance training experience. Must be 17 years or older to enroll.

CDT Stretching/Eutonia Class | 18+

Instructor: Silvana Cardell

This practice will intensify the ability to observe the body in stillness, at rest and in movement. Freeing joins, improving flexibility and releasing muscular tension this movement practice and observation includes working with elements of Eutony, a practice created by Gerda Alexander. The word eutony, from the Greek “eu” = good, well and “tonos”= tension, expresses the idea of well-balanced tension. A series of guided movement explorations will lead participants to release tension leading to wellbeing and a sense of balance. 

Level: This class is intended for both professional dancers and movers with no dance experience.

Advanced Ballet | 18+

Instructor: Megan Flynn

This ballet class is geared toward professional dancers, recent graduates, college dance majors, dance educators, and anyone craving a ballet class that encourages experimentation and risk-taking within a supportive community.

Level: Intermediate to advanced. Requires dance training experience.

Classes for Adults

Better than Zumba: Afro-Cuban Dance for Adults

Instructor: Leilani Chirino

Level: All levels welcome. Must be 16 years or older to enroll. 

Fun, high energy work-out class to the sounds of Cuba- like dancing in the streets of Havana! Tone your body while learning to isolate your hips and torso and enjoy the rhythms of traditional and modern Cuban music.

Level: Beginner, all levels welcome. Adult class

Modern & Contemporary Dance

Instructor: Ama Gora (Tuesday) & Megan Migdley (Thursdays)

This contemporary class is focused on improving formal dance technique as well as developing individual creativity and finding one’s own interpretation of movement. The class includes technique, stretching, strengthening the core and other muscles, improvisation and choreographed combinations to allow students to express themselves and master musicality within one’s body. The class will focus on helping dancers explore their imagination and physicality in contemporary dance by using dynamics, fluidity and different textures. We will work to encourage dancers to move through space and initiate different weight exchanges in order to fulfill their movement potential. 

Level: All levels welcome. Must be 17 years or older to enroll. 

Balance & Stretching for Adults

Instructor: Amelia Estrada

the Drawing from yoga, Pilates, and floor-barre, this class will focus on increasing core strength, flexibility, and balance. The class will begin with movement patterns that warm up the body and increase blood flow followed by body-weight oriented exercises that build strength and stability. The second half of class will be dedicated to stretching and balance exercises. We will end class with a brief meditation. This class is intended for the general community and is open to adults of all ages and abilities. Please bring a yoga or exercise mat if you have one (suggested but not required). No prior experience needed.    

Level: All levels welcome. Must be 16 years or older to enroll. 

Partner Dance for Adults

Instructor: Karen Furhman & Jason Heartsfield

Work-out with your partner! Hand to hand balancing, safety executed and illustrated with Karen and Jason. You’ll laugh hysterically sometimes and feel closer to your partner/friend. Find new ways to interact and problem solve- all while developing core, upper and lower body strength. Such a unique way to connect.

Level: All levels welcome. Must be 18 years or older to enroll.

Adult Movement class (the “I-Used-To-Dance” Class) 

Did you used to take classes and miss dancing?  Are you sick of your workout regimen?  Come take a fun, unique movement classwhile developing your strength, fluidity, and flexibility.  Play and express yourself again.  We move through visualizations, yoga, Pilates, and breathing techniques. We release, we play, we dance.

21 and up

Urban Dance

Instructor: Hassan Syed and Megan Midgley

This class will fuse multiple Hip-Hop styles to create a challenging movement combination. The warm up will consist of different footwork exercises as well as Hip Hop grooves. Students will work to digest the choreography quickly adding their own unique style and individuality. Students will learn how to play with different rhythm patterns tuning into their musicality. This class will help develop strong isolation techniques that will enhance better body control and more clear movement patterns.

Level: All levels welcome. Must be 17 years or older to enroll. 

Dance Fusion

Instructor: Olive Prince

A fusion of modern techniques, improvisational activities, and somatic exercises to develop technical skills, encourage versatility in movement, and promote awareness of training as performance. Classes begin with investigations of symmetry and breath to align and open the body.  Class progresses to moving on and off balance, in and out of the floor, and traveling with variations in speed, precision, and qualitative range.  

Olive approaches students as an embodied educator with the freedom to use the energy of the group as a partner, not merely as receivers of information. Throughout the class, expect a sweaty mix of movement sequences that encourage dancers to take risks with centering, following momentum, and connecting to the space with ease, presence, and dynamic range. 

Level: All levels welcome. Must be 18 years or older to enroll. 

Classes for Children & Teens

Urban Dance

Creative Dance & Ballet

Creative dance is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of Ballet, this form of dance that provides structure and the potential for personal expression, improves wellbeing – and the development of creativity and self-expression.

Level: All levels welcome. Classes are for 5-7 years old.

Creative Dance

Creative dance is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of dance, this form of dance provides the potential for improving wellbeing, the development of creativity and self-expression. Creative Dance is also designed to introduce young kids to dance techniques and to foster their interest in learning and experiencing movement as they grow and develop. These classes blend movement qualities, music, improvisation, and basic dance steps of different forms. It is taught embracing and fostering young movers’ unique creative impulses.

Level: 3 to 5 years old

Level: All levels welcome. Classes are for 5-7 and 3-5 years old.

World Dance | All Ages

Instructor: Ama Gora

A weekly, one-hour dance class rooted in West African nuances. Influences from traditional dances originating out of Guinea are incorporated. Neo African forms such as Afro Beats allow for high energy work out. Participants are asked to bring a lappa or wrap to each class.

Level: All ages & levels welcome.

Contemporary Dance

Instructors: Amalia Estrada (Wednesday)

This class will offer students the opportunity to build their technique in contemporary and modern dance practices while also encouraging creative practice and self-expression. The first half of the class will be technique focused and include movement patterns drawn from Horton, Graham, and Tecnica Cubana. The second half of the class will focus on improvisation and composition. Students will be introduced to various choreographic systems, games, and prompts, giving them the opportunity to generate their own movement, express their creativity and explore their artistic voice. 

Level: All levels welcome. Classes are for 8-11 and 12-17 year olds.

Gymnastics

Instructor: Jason Heartfield

Coach Jason is a kind, clear, and experienced. Little ones love his fun ideas and don’t even realize that they are learning gymnastic skills that will strengthen and enable them to execute more advanced terms. Jason, a 3rd generation gymnast just makes it look easy, as he facilitates the students towards gymnastic clarity and advancing their ability.

Level: All levels welcome. Classes are for 7-11 year olds.

Mommy & Me

Instructor: Marion Ramirez

These classes aim to support new parents and the postpartum body, celebrate the ways we move with our baby, and re-experience seeing and feeling the world again alongside our babies’ developmental process. This class series will be grounded in somatic movement and dance, with a focus on practicing efficient ways to go on and off the floor to play & rest while finding strength and softness. During the class the instructor will share ways to interact with the baby using body awareness, movement, touch and, sound- our first languages, to support their developmental growth and remember our own. Creating a space for learning techniques for giving and receiving basic body-work, this class support wellbeing at a moment when parents are sleep deprived and adjusting to hormonal changes.
